Gone with the click

Website navigation plays a big role in determining the stickiness of your site. A site’s stickiness refers to the amount of time a user stays and explore your site.

Now, generally we click on links on websites – and that is how we navigate the web. In 2005 a clever bunch of web  developers and designers decided to challenge the conventional a website was browsed.. launched a project called dontclick.it.  Dontclick.it describes the conventional way of clicking through a website as being  the perfect mechanism to navigate websites: a click encapsulates total control and quickness. It is something we do impulsively like switching light switches on and off in our houses.

Dontclick.it  sees any mouse movements between clicks as dead space and time. This is what inspired them to take up the challenge of a non-clickable website. The goal of the website is to answer a whole bunch of questions like: how hard is it to break our clicking habits? Does it change our behaviour of navigation? Do we miss the click at all? Is clicking really rooted so deep in us that we can’t resist it?

The website was deployed in two phases. The first phase was solely to create a site that functions without clicking and phase two would capture the data and pull statistics of how many people actually miss the click. The site is rich, entertaining and has a lot of educational features. You can even view the first 20 seconds of the previous users’ experience to see how he/she reacted to the no-click interface and look at stats like the number of accidental clicks recorded on the site.

Wow, it comes naturally! Great article, Bern. But just how lazy are humans becoming?? We don’t even have to use our fingers anymore – we just slimply sloth our wrist to where we want to go…..where is this going….. :)
