Personalised url

With so many social networks available it’s becoming necessary to ‘own’ your brand. For brands and individuals alike it’s important to be consistent and instantly recognisable online. That’s why it’s generally better to use your own name online and to then make sure you use it on twitter, delicious etc and customise your linkedin url and flickr url instead of the standard random numbers.

Most sites offer this feature for free. Facebook however never has…..apparently they have been doing some digging with users to see who would be prepared to pay for a so called vanity url. It perhaps comes from the fact that MySpace and LinkedIn just to name two – have always offered this.

It seems that Facebook may have identified a potential money spinner. I think they should have offered this ages ago….I would possibly pay from a personal ‘name ownership’ and online consistency point of view but then again the facebook search function is pretty powerful. What I would probably pay for is a customised url for a fan page so that the brand ‘owns’ that space and url.

What are your thoughts?
